After a long and artistically triumphant association with Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff that lasted from 1969's The O'Jays in Philadelphia to 1987's Let Me Love You, the O'Jays broke their ties to the legendary Philly producers/songwriters, left Philadelphia International Records and opted for a more high-tech 'urban contemporary' approach with Serious. Kenny and Johnny Whitehead are the multi-talented sons of John Whitehead (of Whitehead & McFadden). The Whitehead Boys' problem is that they're musical in-betweeners -- their style is too light for hardcore fans and too suggestive for Boyz II Men followers. Their attempts at gangsta rap are almost laughable; the songs are constructed well, but their recitations just aren't believable. Meanwhile, love songs like 'Shaniqua,' 'Beautiful Black Princess,' 'Sex On the Beach,' and others sound limp compared to the testosterone-laced efforts of artists like Dru Hill, H-Town, and Jodeci.
